There’s something incredibly special about newborn photography. The tiny details, the softness, the way a baby curls into themselves in those first few days. What most people don’t see, though, is the gentle work that happens after the session to bring those images to life.

I wanted to share a little before and after from a recent session to show the subtle, careful steps that go into creating the final images parents fall in love with. It’s never about changing a baby or making them look different. It’s about honouring who they are, keeping everything natural, and polishing the little things that help the photograph feel calm, warm and timeless.

This particular pose is one of my favourites. There’s something so powerful about seeing how tiny a newborn is when held in their parents’ hands, and then seeing that same little one on their own in the simplest of setups. Both versions tell a different part of the story. Together, they show scale, connection and the beauty of those early days. The focus is entirely on baby — their features, their softness, their newness — without anything distracting from the moment.

When I edit a newborn image, I’m looking for the things that can distract from the feeling. Slight colour casts from blankets or lighting, tiny flakes of skin, redness, or marks that are completely normal for newborns. I soften these gently while keeping the texture and authenticity of their skin. I also bring warmth into the tones, even out the shadows, and make sure the focus stays exactly where it should be — on your baby.

The before image is always beautiful in its own right. The after image simply reflects how the moment felt in the room. Soft. Peaceful. Held.

Every newborn session is a collaboration between the natural beauty of your baby, the way they settle into a pose, the light we work with, and the quiet editing that ties it all together. It’s a process I take my time with because these photographs become part of your family’s story, and they deserve to feel as gentle and honest as the moment itself.
